Kardex Remstar Offers New Megamat RS Vertical Carousel

Interchangeable carrier design provides material handling organizations with storage flexibility.

The new Megamat RS Vertical Carousel from Kardex Remstar features an interchangeable carrier design, allowing industrial material operations to mix, match and change storage configurations easily at any time. With a standard multipurpose carrier organizations can add partitions, dividers, intermediate shelves, rollout drawers as well as a variety of front lip height and depth clips to customize the unit to meet their storage needs now and in the future.

Changing carrier configurations is easy. Simply remove the stored goods from the carrier, add the carrier insert (partitions, dividers, intermediate shelves or rollout drawers) and replace the stored goods. In other vertical carousel designs, the addition of drawers or shelves requires the entire carrier to be removed and replaced. This can be a time consuming and expensive effort. Each carrier comes standard with a 0.3 inch front lip to prevent stored goods from migrating out. Carrier depth or height clips can be added, providing taller or deeper front lip to secure various sized totes or boxes from migrating out of the carrier. Each carrier also has a partial top to prevent carrier overloading.

Creating a 100 percent customized storage space allows for maximum storage density. The ability to easily reconfigure the Megamat RS Vertical Carousel in the future provides organizations flexibility as stored goods change. As the size and weight of the stored goods changes over time so can the storage configuration allowing maximum storage density and minimizing wasted space.

Crown Equipment Again Among World’s Best Industrial Designers

Crown WT 3000 Series pallet truck wins Gold IDEA award

Crown Equipment Corporation has announced it has been ranked again by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) as one of the world's best industrial designers. Selected by IDEA and presented by Co. Design and Fast Company, Crown was honored with a 2011 Gold International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) for the Crown WT 3000 Series of pallet trucks. Crown has won more IDEAs in the Commercial and Industrial Equipment category in the last 11 years than any other company. This is the sixth consecutive and nineteenth overall IDEA award for Crown.

The Crown WT 3000 Series of pallet trucks, which are available in Europe, are designed to accommodate intense pallet truck conditions and high throughput demands. The Crown WT 3000 Series combines robust engineering, durability, performance and operator comfort, and is loaded with innovative features such as the Crown Access 1 2 3®, AC technology, and e-GEN® braking system to lower operating costs and improve energy efficiency. The FlexRide® suspension system provides riding comfort during trailer loading and transport, and the optional weight-adjustable FlexRide® platform reduces impact shock to the driver.

Davin Stowell, IDSA's 2011 IDEA Jury Chair and chief executive officer of Smart Design, an international design company, said, "Like magic. Just when you thought Crown had already done everything that could be done in pallet trucks, they created this cost-efficient modular system that can transform into a multitude of different configurations depending on the customer's needs — all with breakthrough features for safety and rider comfort. Just like pulling a rabbit out of a hat!"

According to Clive Roux, IDSA's CEO, "The IDEA program is considered by many as the 'Oscars' of design competitions because the judging process is rigorous and judged by the experts in their field." The IDSA IDEA program receives thousands of product submissions each year but only a few are honored with an IDEA award. With entrants from countries as far-reaching as Japan, Croatia, Brazil and New Zealand and a continuing upward trend in international participation, the IDEA program highlights the best in design from around the world.

Since the 1960s, Crown has earned more than 50 design awards. In the past decade alone, IDSA recognized Crown with an IDEA for these products:

Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks Unveils New Walkie Stacker

Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks has announced the addition of a new 3,000-3,500 lb capacity Heavy-Duty Electric Walkie Straddle Stacker to its North American product line. The new PWT15 and PWT18 walkie stacker models feature an AC-powered drive motor and electric power steering option, giving operators precise control when traveling at any speed.

Several helpful features extend the new walkie stacker's battery life and increase efficiency. The stacker can be easily powered-up by using a key or with an optional keyless access pad. Optionally, after a set amount of time of inactivity, the walkie stacker's auto shutdown feature powers the forklift down, conserving energy and allowing for more run time. The advanced regenerative braking system also enhances efficiency and control by smoothing out directional changes and reducing brake pad and component wear.

The forklift’s AC-powered drive motor's brushless design significantly diminishes noise levels and improves operating efficiency. The electrical system's emphasis on power and efficiency makes it ideal for repetitive stacking applications where travel distances are relatively minimal, such as storage and staging areas, skid, cart or work-table applications. Adding the electric power steering option improves the already precise steering control.  Also, the addition of a steering motor to the system helps to reduce operator fatigue and boasts quiet activation.

Further empowering the operator's control, the new walkie stacker is equipped with both pinwheel and crawl speed functions. The pinwheel function gives the operator the ability to pinwheel the forklift with the handle in a completely vertical position while pressing the crawl speed button. This function also provides better utilization of space and helps increase productivity.

The walkie stacker offers features geared toward operator security as well. The emergency reverse button will stop and reverse movement of the stacker if the operator is traveling in the forward direction and gets caught in close quarters. Like all Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks products, the new walkie stacker is backed by some of the industry's best programs for payment options and services, including parts and labor for all systems for one year.

Toyota Industrial Equipment MFG., Inc. Achieves Safety Milestone

Toyota Material Handling, U.S.A., Inc. (TMHU) has announced the Service Parts Management department at Toyota Industrial Equipment Mfg., Inc. (TIEM) has achieved 200,000 consecutive hours worked without a recordable accident according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The 200,000 hours represents 1,248 work days over the past three years at the Columbus, Ind.-based manufacturing plant.

"At Toyota safety is our focus," said Tim Barker, vice president of corporate services for TIEM. "I’m very pleased this is the second department at TIEM to achieve this milestone in the past 12 months, and I’m proud of these associates and their dedication to safe practices."

Safety and Quality Top Priority at TIEM

Toyota’s high standard of manufacturing excellence, which emphasizes safety and quality is reinforced daily with all associates and management teams. As part of the program, TIEM works to incorporate safety awareness and risk reduction into all plant activities associated with the manufacture of Toyota lift trucks and replacement parts for industrial lift trucks and tow tractors, along with the assembly of motor vehicle parts and accessories.

TIEM has put into place a number of safety programs to address ergonomic and hazardous challenges. For example, TIEM created a safety "Dojo," or training area, on the shop floor. These programs have contributed toward TIEM being honored for its safety systems and performance record including the 2010 "Top Plant" award by Plant Engineering magazine.

Termination Procrastination

"Profit covers many sins.” That means that many of us may have become a little complacent and tend to procrastinate when it comes to problem employees. Maybe we didn’t quite run our business following absolute best practice. Maybe some of us overlooked less than the best performance expected from our employees. Maybe we were a little too compassionate regarding employee effectiveness and as a result we haven’t “weeded the garden” to allow our good employees to flourish. Instead, we just procrastinated on making these kinds of decisions.

If your company is one that got caught in that viscous web of easy success and thought that prosperity in the market wouldn’t end and you didn’t quite pay attention to basic best practice business acumen, you may have fallen prey to the “Procrastinating Concept of Profit Covers Many Sins”.

Now is the Time to Clean up Your Mess

In other words, it is time to stop procrastinating and focus. Focus on what is the minimum acceptable level of performance. I try to stress to all my clients that in today’s economy, "average performance” is just not acceptable. You need to make sure that all your employees are dedicated, competent and necessary core employees to sharpen the focus of every element of your process and system. This will allow you to expand your market share so that you can weather the hard times and be stronger during the economic recovery.

Take the Surgical “Pruning Approach”

No garden can flourish if it is full of weeds. Now is the time to stop procrastinating and get rid of the weeds first. Compassion is a wonderful thing and is often referred to as strength. However, too much compassion can be a life threatening weakness. Keeping “old Joe” around simply because he has been with you for fifteen years isn’t a good enough reason if “old Joe” hasn’t been cutting it for the past five years. Keeping Sally on the payroll because she is your wife’s cousin even though she just figured out how to use the copy machine after five years will do irreparable harm to your organization and lower the performance of other employees.

A surgical pruning strategy only begins with the precision pruning of the workforce. To strengthen the company means you must also invest in employee development and upgrades while you are surgically making precision cuts in the workforce eliminating underperforming unacceptable employees. You may terminate three low performing or non performing employees and replace two of them with higher quality, higher performing candidates.

No One said It Would be Easy – Be Fair and Consistent

Terminating any employee regardless of circumstance is not pleasant. You are messing with people’s lives; families are involved. You have a moral obligation to make sure that your actions are honest, ethical and above board. However, your decision must be based on some basic premises. The following tips can support your decision making process.

• Make sure employees have had fair and consistent performance reviews. Determine with factual examples which employees are your top performers and which employees are below average performers. Review and analyze contributions to success.  This will support your surgical pruning strategy when it comes to weeding the garden.

• Don't cut back on skills training and management development. It’s easy to cut training but in reality it should be the last thing you look at. That doesn’t mean you can’t be a little more cost conscious about it. But don’t eliminate training in its entirety.

• Communicate - the worst thing you can do is keep employees in the dark. Over communicate. Be honest and open with employees. They are not stupid. Tell them the truth and update them often. If you don’t communicate regularly, employees will make stuff up in their own minds and what they envision is generally much worse than reality. Most employees know before you do who is doing the job and who isn’t. How often have you terminated someone and employees have said --- “It’s about time?”

Remember One Key Factor

Sometimes performance issues are not always due to the employee not being competent or capable. Sometimes their performance is the direct result of the incompetence of their supervisor.

Terminating any employee is likely to be the most difficult decision you will ever have to make. There will be ups and downs in the process. However, before you come to the conclusion that you are actually going to hand out a pink slip, you must be sure that you have exhausted every possible option and scenario imaginable to solve the problem short of termination. And of course, the amount and type of destructive behavior is also paramount to the decision you make. If you're struggling with current employees, here are some guidelines to help determine it's time to let someone go.

• Their work is consistently below acceptable standards with numerous mistakes

• They fail to reach goals and objectives on a regular basis

• They have a poor attitude and it has a definite impact on other employees

• They do not respond well to coaching or constructive feedback

• They have had good supervision and direction from a servant style manager

As managers, we must continuously look for ways to uncover potential new employees who have the attitude and the skill set to perform up to our expectations. Obviously skill sets come first and they are identifiable and measurable. But, beyond these tangible, measurable factors lies the true immeasurable, cultural factors that separate the winners from the losers. Those factors include:

• Positive attitude

• Willingness

• Inner strength

• Self-motivation

• Competitive drive

If these factors are missing the odds against the employee living up to expectations are enormous regardless of their skills sets. The most talented “A” players in the industry are competitive to the point where they are actually driven to achieve at a level even beyond their talents. Add sell-discipline, self-motivation and attitude and you have a winner worth keeping. Remember, as a business you do not have the luxury of keeping poor or mediocre employees. You must keep only the best employees for your business. And, don't feel guilty for letting go of inefficient or unproductive employees. You're growing a business, not running a charity.

Sta-Kon Plastic Strip-Fed Terminals Enable Stable, High-Volume Production

Manufactured as a continuously molded strip, Sta-Kon® Plastic Strip-Fed Terminals will not jam equipment and tooling, and have a more consistent surface than plastic strips that are welded together.

The Sta-Kon design features improve performance and functionality. The funnel-entry design of Sta-Kon Terminals enables faster and easier wire insertion. Internal barrel serrations increase conductivity and pullout strength. The sleeved barrels prevent separation that can diminish both pullout strength and dielectric performance.

“Sta-Kon Plastic Strip-Fed Terminals continue the brand’s tradition of innovation,” said Pam Pagenkopf, product manager at Thomas & Betts. “The continuous molding reduces downtime by not jamming equipment as Mylar-tape systems are prone to do.”

The Sta-Kon Plastic Strip-Fed Terminals’ nylon insulation is UL94V2 flame rated and withstands operating temperatures of 221 degrees Fahrenheit (105 degrees Celsius). The insulation is resistant to chemical exposure, impact and abrasion. Sta-Kon Plastic Strip-Fed Terminals have a maximum rating of 600 volts and are UL listed.

(TMHU), has been named as one of 75 Green Supply Chain Partners in Inbound Logistics Magazine’s annual listing for the third consecutive year, since the award’s inception. Chosen for this title because of their environmentally friendly solutions and manufacturing process, the ranking demonstrates Toyota’s dedication to supply chain sustainability. The companies selected are featured in the June issue.

"Inbound Logistics’ June feature profiles 75 companies in several categories of logistics service providers – from 3PLs, truckers, ports to lift truck manufacturers – which its editors determine are truly ‘walking the walk’ and committed to supply chain sustainability. The companies selected, including Toyota, have a long-standing history of supporting their customers' drive to environmental initiatives and an internal commitment to be as lean and green as possible,"  explained Felecia Stratton, editor, Inbound Logistics.

Green 75 feature is designed to provide decision support for Inbound Logistics’ readers seeking to do business with sustainable providers. To be eligible for the ranking, companies must provide logistics service with an emphasis on eco-friendly solutions. The listing includes 75 companies, which are categorized based on the services provided.

“Toyota is honored to be named a Green Supply Chain Partner for the third consecutive year,” said Brett Wood, president of Toyota Material Handling, U.S.A., Inc. “We are committed to sustainability across our operations. In addition to developing technologically advanced, fuel-efficient lift trucks, we look for ways to reduce our environmental impact and improve our operations, while supporting our dealers, suppliers and community partners in their efforts.”

How to Say “No” The Right Way

We all have to say "no" at times. Some people find it easier than others. What is interesting is that almost all of us struggle with the right way to say it.

People who hate to say no find it hard to do, and sometimes do something much worse than hurt someone's feelings. They either don't say anything, which passively sends an incorrect message of "yes," or they say no in such a way that the other person doesn't really know what is being said, sending the message of "maybe."

People who don't mind saying no don't find it hard to do, but can lack the skills to do it gracefully and very often instill hard feelings, even when that is not their intent.

For those of you who have no problem saying no, but need a little guidance on how to say it more effectively, here are some tips.

Tip #1: "I'm Sorry" doesn't have to mean you are really sorry. A little empathy can go a long way.

Tip #2: Repeat back to the other person their point of view.

That will allow them to listen to yours.  Once you prove to someone you understand their point of view, by repeating it back to them, they can stop explaining it over and over again.

Tip #3: You don't have to prove to someone that the situation is their fault. Most people just want empathy, not for you to take the blame. If possible, take their side as much as you can, but return to the situation at hand.

Tip #4: Show the other person you wish it could be different. Telling someone, "I wish I could do this for you…however, I just can't" is much more powerful than, "I won't do this for you because I don't have to."

Tip #5: Help solve the problem in another way if possible. Even if alternatives aren't the answer, the fact that you offered them shows you care. Most people, when being told "no," can take it a little better if it is coming from someone who seems to genuinely care.

Tip #6: Avoid the word "but" when empathizing. When you say, "I understand, but…" what the other person hears is, "I don't understand."

Using the tips above, you can say no and avoid conflict. The following examples show how a different approach can save you from an unpleasant situation.

SCENARIO 1

Pat is a hotel clerk who is trying to help Mr. Donnelly. It's late at night and he needs a hotel room.

Mr. Donnelly: Look, I really need a room tonight. You're the sixth hotel I've been to and I'm getting really tired.

Pat: I'm sorry, there are no rooms; we're completely booked.

Mr. Donnelly: Please? I'm exhausted.

Pat: I understand, but that doesn't change the fact that we have no rooms.

Mr. Donnelly: But I'm exhausted.

Pat: I understand, but how is that our fault? You should have made a reservation.

Mr. Donnelly: Can't you do something for me?

Pat: (Turning the terminal toward Mr. Donnelly) Look, we have no rooms!

Notice how Pat said she was sorry, but she didn't really convey that very well. She was also concerned with proving Mr. Donnelly was at fault. She offered no real solution, and certainly did not appear that she wished it were different. The next example shows how Pat does when she applies the tips above.

Mr. Donnelly: Look, I really need a room tonight. You're the sixth hotel I've been to and I'm getting really tired.

Pat: Oh, I'm very sorry, there are no rooms; we have a conference here and we're completely booked.

Mr. Donnelly: Please? I'm exhausted.

Pat: Mr. Donnelly, I understand that you are exhausted. I know you don't want to have to keep searching for a room at other hotels. I see how tired you are and understand what you are going through. Believe me, if I had a room, I would definitely give it to you. The truth is... I just don't have a room available. I'd do it if I could… but just can't. Can I help you find a room somewhere else?

Mr. Donnelly: Ugh. Okay, yes, please!

Pat's approach led to a much better result. Mr. Donnelly isn't thrilled, but he is ready to move on.

SCENARIO 2

Debbie is a sales person at a department store. The store has a very strict policy about not accepting refunds over 30 days.

Mr. Adam: I want to turn this in for a refund, please.

Debbie: This was purchased over 30 days ago, so I can't do that.

Mr. Adam: I didn't know that when I bought it.

Debbie: I understand, but you should have read the return policy then. It's right there on the sales receipt.

Mr. Adam: Who reads sales receipts?

Debbie: People who want refunds.

Mr. Adam: Come on. It's been 34 days. What's the big deal?

Debbie: I understand, but 30 days is the limit. Sorry. You're going to have to be reasonable about this.

Mr. Adam: (Now angry) I am being reasonable!!

Notice how Debbie failed to empathize with the customer. She blamed the customer for not understanding the policy. She even went so far as to imply the customer is an unreasonable person.

The next example shows what happens when Debbie approaches the situation with the tips in mind.

Mr. Adam: I want to turn this in for a refund, please.

Debbie: I'm very sorry Mr. Adam, but since this was purchased over 30 days ago, no refunds are allowed.

Mr. Adam: But I didn't know that.

Debbie: I understand that. It's on the receipt, and often people don't really read their receipts, so I can understand that you didn't know about the policy.

Mr. Adam: Well I have to return it. I can't use it now and it's expensive.

Debbie: Mr. Adam, I really do understand. This is an expensive item and you are now realizing you can't use it. I truly wish the store policy were different and wish there was some way to make an exception. The policy is quite firm, however, and there is just no way to provide a refund. Can I help you find something you can exchange it for that might be acceptable to you?

Mr. Adam: Oh…okay. Do you have a catalog or something?

Hopefully that sounds a little better as well. Remember, saying no doesn't have to create bad feelings if you show a little empathy. Follow these simple tips and you might just get a little less resistance from people.

The website allows users to view forklift specifications and includes the option to request a quote, email a product brochure or download the digital brochure directly from a mobile device. The dealer locator feature gives customers quick and easy access to dealership addresses and phone numbers and includes geo-tracking capabilities for some mobile devices.

One-Piece Hygienic ProStack® Pallet Ideal for Food, Pharmaceutical, Medical Handling

Formed in a single piece to eliminate crevices and cavities that could potentially harbor bacteria, mold and other contaminants, the ProStack® One-Piece Hygienic Pallet is ideal for food, pharmaceutical and medical applications.

Its see-through, open-grid top deck, smooth finish and flow-through design make sanitization and cleaning easy, while facilitating quality inspections.

“It’s critically important for companies in the food processing and pharmaceutical industries to ensure the purity of their ingredients and finished products,” notes Dan Kelly, President and CEO of Polymer Solutions International, Inc., the pallet’s manufacturer. “That’s why we designed this pallet to be hygienic, easy-to-clean, durable and ideal for quality inspections.

Transporting and storing food and pharmaceuticals on hygienic plastic pallets, along with correct handling procedures, dramatically reduces the risk of contamination.” Edge-rackable up to 2,200 pounds, the pallet measures 40 x 48 x 6.25 inches and comes in two models: full perimeter picture frame or three-stringer. The pallet is rated for a 30,000 pound static load, or a 5,000 pound dynamic load. Four-way fork entry accommodates use with either forklifts or pallet jacks. All hygienic pallet models achieve the critical ergonomic benchmark of weighing less than 50 lbs. All models will weight just 45 to 48 pounds—8 to 10 percent lighter than competitors’ plastic pallets.

“The lighter weight is a critical feature because of OSHA requirements, and the resulting need to eliminate workplace injuries by reducing the amount of weight people need to handle while on the job,” Kelly continues. “Our engineering group achieved this through a painstaking design and testing process, allowing us to enhance racking strength and durability.”

Extremely durable, the pallet’s design contributes to cost reduction, adds Kelly. “Cost savings are realized by increased cycles and longer life. Pallets don’t fail in a parking lot or in a warehouse—they fail in the production line, causing costly shut downs. A higher quality pallet translates directly to increased manufacturing efficiencies and a decrease in the cost-per-trip,”

ProStack One-Piece Hygienic Pallets can be made from several material options depending upon customer requirements, including100 percent recyclable, FDA-approved high density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene (PP). They are also available with Factory Mutual Research Corporation (FM) approved grades of flame retardant, now with a Non-Deca Bromine Additive.

For further customization to meet individual application needs, the pallets may be ordered with grommets, hot-stamped logo or identification marks, and in black, medium blue or gray.

Plug Power to Provide Kroger Co. with GenDrive Fuel Cell Solution

Plug Power Inc. has announced it has added Kroger Co. to its growing list of GenDrive® customers. Plug Power will supply 161 GenDrive fuel cells to Kroger’s food distribution center in Compton, Calif. The order includes four class-1 units for sit down counterbalanced trucks, 42 class-2 units for reach trucks and 115 class-3 units for pallet trucks. With this partnership, Kroger will power its fleet of electric lift trucks with GenDrive fuel cells. Because GenDrive is fueled with hydrogen, the only byproducts created through the electrochemical energy-conversion process are heat and water. Plug Power and Kroger have developed a hydrogen fueling infrastructure, placing compact dispensers strategically throughout the facility. Lift truck operators can fuel the GenDrive units themselves in as little as sixty seconds. Once fueled, trucks resume activity on the facility floor, moving products. Productivity improvements can be expected as the electric lift truck operates at full power as long as fuel is supplied.

“Kroger tested our GenDrive product and saw clear benefits to its operations which led them to engage with Plug Power on a full conversion of their facility,” said Andy Marsh. “Plug Power’s customers are leaders in the industry; forward-thinkers working toward building better, more efficient and more sustainable businesses for its customers, employees and communities. Kroger fits that mold perfectly.”

Environmentally conscious business operations with a positive economic impact are at the forefront of decision-making in the material handling industry. And, Plug Power’s GenDrive product is helping sustainably-progressive customers, such as Kroger, take charge of its greenhouse gas emission footprint.

TMHU Receives National Safety Council Award

Toyota Material Handling, U.S.A., Inc. (TMHU) has announced that Toyota Industrial Equipment Mfg., Inc. (TIEM), the manufacturer of the number one selling lift truck in the U.S., was awarded the Occupational Excellence Achievement Award by the National Safety Council. The Occupational Excellence Achievement Award is given to companies that have a lost time injury rate of less than 50 percent of companies in the same business classification. The National Safety Council tracks data in accordance with the federal OSHA calendar year standard. During the last calendar year, TIEM achieved a lost-time incident rate less than 7 percent of the average rate in the same business classification.

“Every associate, manager and executive at TIEM has safety as their top priority,” said TIEM’s Environmental, Health and Safety Manager Dixon Churchill. “When associates know their managers truly care for their health and safety, it creates an environment

where everyone is focused on reaching the company’s business goals. With TIEM’s focus on safety, we see reduced absenteeism, lower turnover rates, higher productivity and better quality products.”

Toyota’s high standard of manufacturing excellence, which emphasizes safety and quality, is reinforced daily with all associates and management teams. As part of the program, TIEM works to incorporate safety awareness and risk reduction into all plant activities associated with the manufacture of Toyota lift trucks and replacement parts for industrial lift trucks and tow tractors, along with the assembly of motor vehicle parts and accessories.

Terex Achieves Minimum Tender Condition for Demag Cranes Offer

Terex Corporation has announced that the minimum acceptance level of 51 percent for the voluntary public tender offer by Terex Industrial Holding AG to all shareholders of Demag Cranes AG at EUR 45.50 per share has been exceeded.

Preliminary information indicates that the offer was accepted for a total of at least 14 million shares of Demag Cranes by the end of the acceptance period. This corresponds to approximately 67 percent all outstanding shares of Demag Cranes, and approximately 68 percent together with the shares of Demag Cranes previously purchased by Terex Industrial Holding AG.

According to the German Securities Acquisition and Takeover Act (WpÜG), shareholders of Demag Cranes who have not accepted the offer during the acceptance period will have the opportunity to tender their shares during an additional acceptance period of two weeks following the publication of the final tender results. The completion of the offer still remains subject to several other conditions, primarily the merger control clearance by the European Commission.

“We are pleased with the high level of support for this transaction from the shareholders and management of Demag Cranes,” said Ronald M. DeFeo, Terex Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.  “With the addition of Demag Cranes to the Terex Group, we will add a new business segment with world-class products in industrial cranes/hoists and port technology.

“The success of our offer demonstrates the confidence in the compelling industrial rationale of this deal and the growth opportunities for both companies.”

Terex reports net sales of $4.4 billion in 2010 and 16,300 employees worldwide. Demag Cranes, headquartered in Dusseldorf, Germany, is a leading provider of industrial cranes, crane components, harbor cranes and port automation technology. Demag Cranes' business is highly complementary to the existing Terex business, and the combination has compelling industrial logic. The combined entity would have had total revenues of about $5.8 billion in 2010 with a strong footprint in Europe and emerging markets, especially in China.

Is Your CFO Really a Chief Financial Officer?

No offense to all those dedicated, competent, excellent performing CFO’s out there but I have to admit that I run into a number of individuals in business that hold the respectable title of CFO (Chief Financial Officer) that shouldn’t be the Chief of anything. Oh, some of these CFO impersonators do a good job as an accountant and some may even qualify as a Controller. But, there are also some that just shouldn’t hold the title of Chief Financial Officer.

“The chief financial officer (CFO) is a corporate officer primarily responsible for managing the financial risks of the corporation. This officer is also responsible for financial planning and record-keeping, as well as financial

reporting to higher management. The CFO is also responsible for analysis of data”.

So ask yourself, is your CFO really a Chief Financial Officer or did you simply give them that title due to tenure, compassion or because they are a family member?

An effective CFO starts by asking the question of all management personnel --- What needs do you have, and how can I help?'"

Real CFOs

Real CFOs today are structuring and negotiating mergers, working with division managers to cut costs, stepping in for the CEO to talk to investors and boards of directors as well as coordinating all the components of strategic planning. Being a CFO is not just about finances. And yet, you must be careful not to burden the CFO with responsibilities that they are not qualified to handle. A simple example might be putting them over information technology with no practical experience in that field to avoid hiring an IT specialist.

The CFO bears responsibility for the results of core finance activities and provides appropriate analyses. A Real CFO is both a navigator and an advisor to business managers throughout the organization. This person must be ready and willing to manage the administrative side of the business, and the strategic requirements involved in measuring and validating successful results. A key responsibility includes fighting for investments in the growth of the business. The CFO must instill confidence with all of the stakeholders focusing on particular roles and activities both internally and externally.

A Real CFO has the ability to build consensus, to inspire confidence, and to be a navigator for the CEO and make decisions authoritatively. They must be ready and willing to provide an opinion when and where necessary, fight for its implementation and be humble enough to back off and support alternative ideas, as appropriate.

The Relationship with the CEO

How chummy should the chief executive get with the CFO? Some experts warn against developing too close a relationship with any top subordinate, because you have to make judgments that are based on what's in the best interest of the company. However, relationships are important and being able to get together and discuss critical issues informally can only strengthen the executive team.

The best situation for any CEO and CFO is a close relationship, not as equals, but the fewer formalities the better. The ability to talk on the phone over a weekend should not be considered an imposition on personal time.

Much greater demands on businesses to perform makes a company’s accounting and finance functions, led by the Chief Financial Officer, play a broader role in guiding decisions across the business in order to maximize shareholder value. In addition to broadening this role, finance departments are making strategic investments in IT solutions that automate and standardize critical processes within their own department and across all functions of the business. These investments not only help decrease costs and cycle times, but pay additional dividends in the form of strengthened compliance and improved financial returns.

So, if your CFO demonstrates not only leadership but also integrity and honesty, which objectively balances the competing needs of internal staff, the board of directors, investors, other stakeholders and maintains integrity in the face of investor or board expectations for results then you have an excellent Chief Financial Officer. If they don’t – reevaluate your thought process.
